Hackney is a culturally diverse and vibrant area in London’s East End – known for its working-class vibes and trendy edge. But a lot has changed in Hackney since 2000 and the area has seen an influx of new high-end shops, international restaurants and bars, and cultural centres.
Here are a few fun and essential things to do in Hackney – one of the hippest places to hang in London.
Watch a Play at the Legendary Hackney Empire Theatre
The Hackney Empire is the stage for a variety of performances, including musical theatre and comedy. The Hackney Empire was established in the 1900s and was built to serve as a music hall, which was remodelled into a modern theatre. The stage once hosted comedy legend Charlie Chaplin and still maintains its appeal with contemporary comedians from around the country. The Hackney Empire has hosted several classic plays like Macbeth and operas.
Explore Hackney’s Ethnic Delights at Broadway Market
Broadway Market is located in the southern area of Hackney’s London Fields and is one of the coolest places to grab a bite and drink. This bustling street is packed with cafes, bars, restaurants, and pubs, and this makes a perfect spot to relax if you are in the mood for local delicacies and authentic international flavours.
If you visit the Broadway Market on a Saturday, don’t forget to check out the wares that sold by street vendors, especially the ethnic street food and vintage clothing.
You’re sure to find plenty of unique items in Broadway Market at ridiculously low prices – a major reason it is a popular place to visit.
Take your time and browse the arts and crafts stalls, maybe you will find an interesting piece for a gift for personal use.
Visit the Famously Quaint Broadway Bookshop
Hackney has quite a number of the cutest cafes and bookshops in London. Broadway Bookshop is one such independent book cave, nestled at the canal end of Broadway Market.
It is a heaven for any book lover or bookworm looking for old classics and bestsellers. It specialises in fiction, but you will find a section dedicated to everything from travel to local history.
If you’re interested in learning more about Hackney, this quaint little London bookshop has everything you need and more.
Put Your Putting Skills to the Test at Plonk Golf London Fields
Plonk Golf London Fields is one of the newest additions to Plonk. The venue has all the elements of a typical Plonk Golf venue including crazy UV lights, crazy golf courses and an exciting ambience.
This venue is suitable for both adults and children, so you can go with your kids and play against each other or as a team.
Like most Plonk (crazy golf) venues, there are also side attractions such as arcade games and a pinball parlour, as well as an ice cream shack, tiki bar and a sandwich shop.
Plonk is easily one of the coolest places to hang out in Hackney, London.
