Beginner’s Guide to Greece ~ A Gorgeous Guide

Greece is one of the world’s most prominent and desirable tourist destinations, with beautiful coastal areas, impressive mountain zones, and more history and culture than you can shake a stick at.

It is pound for pound one of the best countries to visit, a land that’s virtually guaranteed to provide an experience that’ll stick with you for a lifetime.

If you’re thinking about taking your first trip to Greece, then this is the travel guide you need. We’ll run through everything you need to know, including where and when to go and the must-do experiences.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time – How Long to Spend in Greece

One of the best things about Greece is that it’s large and offers varied different experiences. But this can also be something of a downside since it means you’ll need to allocate more time to your trip than you would to a smaller nation. Ideally, you’d go for a couple of weeks.

This will give you enough to spend 3 or 4 days in different regions of the country (such as Athens, a couple of islands, mountain regions).

If you don’t have enough time to do that, then select the key areas you want to see. It’s better to spend a few days getting to know one area rather than rushing around.

Best Time to Go to Greece

Most people visit Greece during July and August, but this isn’t necessarily the best time to go.

For one, there are more people. It can also be extremely hot, and prices are higher, too. There are some advantages to going at this period, however.

For instance, you’ll find that everything is open and that ferries are more regular. But if you can, it’ll probably be best to go to Greece on either side of the high season.

May and September are particularly recommended. During that period, you’ll have perfect weather, lower prices, and fewer people.

Where to Go in Greece

Take a quick look at a map of Greece and you’ll begin to see that, well, it’s a pretty large country!

You’ll need to be selective when planning your trip. You can’t see it all. The good news is that people have been visiting Greece for thousands of years, so there’s a pretty well-trodden path that you can follow.

Most people visit a couple of cities, a couple of islands, and the mountainous region, so if you have the time, then that’s what we recommend.

Don’t Miss: If you only visit one city, then make it Athens. This is one of the world’s great cities, with plenty of history, culture, nightlife, and delicious food. For islands, Corfu, Rhodes, and Santorini are the most popular. For mountainous areas, check out Meteora and Delphi.

What to Eat and Drink in Greece

Now that we’ve taken care of the logistical side of things let’s get into the fun stuff. And what better place to begin than the food?

If you have any love of food, then you’ll already be aware that the Greeks most definitely know what they’re doing when it comes to eating well.

That’s one of the many rewards of having a culture that stretches back thousands of years. Whenever possible (and it’ll always be possible), start your meal with a greek salad. After that, tuck into a gyro, keftedes, moussaka, or souvlaki.

We’ve named those dishes, but honestly, you could probably pick anything off the menu and be happy with what you get.

Dive Into Greece’s Rich Culture and History

Athens is recognised as one of the world’s most historic destinations. They’ve got so many amazing buildings and monuments that stretch back thousands of years.

When you walk through them, you’re walking through places that have had a historic impact on modern culture.

The number one spot for history is the Acropolis, which is in Athens.

Even if you’re not usually a history buff, you’ll find it interesting. Indeed, it’s interesting even aside from the history aspect. Standing high over the city, it offers outstanding views.

There’s also plenty of ancient theatres dotting Athens, and also around the country — the Epidaurus Theatre in Argolis is particularly recommended.

Romance and Luxury Living in Greece

There’s a lot of things to see in Greece, but it’s also important to do nothing other than live the good life.

Greek culture isn’t just about doing things; it’s about living well. And you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do just that. When you’re visiting an island, there’s nothing better than watching the sunset with a glass of wine in your hand.

How and Where to Get Active in Greece

While there’ll be plenty of opportunities to do nothing other than bask in the sunset, if you’re someone who loves to get a little active when they’re away, then you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so.

In Greece, you don’t just hike — you hike history. One of the best hikes you can is climbing up Mount Olympus.

This is a big one in Greek mythology! Another fun one for hikers is exploring the Samaria Gorge, which is one of the best hikes for nature.

Where to Shop and What to Buy

You’ll want to keep your trip in your heart for as long as possible. So why not do it by picking up a souvenir or two?

There are classic Greek souvenirs that are well worth packing to take home with you. You can take the tasty route and invest in some Greek honey or olive oil.

Greek sandals and jewellery are also worth checking out.

Bring a Sense of Adventure

Greece is a country that more or less guarantees a good time. No matter what you’re planning to do, you’ll find that there’s fun at every turn. Bring a sense of adventure with you, and you’ll be highly unlikely to have a disappointing time. Indeed, you’ll likely book another trip to Greece soon.
