Tips for Storing Your Stuff When Travelling or Moving Abroad

Last updated on July 18, 2022

Moving aboard and trying to work out what to do with all your belongings until you find a new home? Heading off on an epic RTW trip and need a safe place to store your stuff while you’re away?

Here are some tips on how and where to store everything so that you can rest assured it’s safe and secure while you’re away.

1. Location is important

You want to make sure that the storage facility is located in a safe area. You also want to make sure that it’s convenient for you to get to. If you’re going to be accessing your belongings often, you don’t want to have to drive for hours to get to them. For example, somewhere like Squab Storage in Leamington Spa is ideal. Additionally, you want to make sure that the facility has good security. You don’t want your belongings to be at risk of being stolen or damaged. It’s also important to make sure that the facility is clean and well-maintained.

2. Size matters

When you’re looking for storage, you need to make sure that you choose a unit that is the right size for your needs. If you choose a unit that is too small, you may not be able to fit all of your belongings. If you choose a unit that is too large, you’ll be paying for space that you’re not using. It’s important to measure the items that you need to store before choosing a storage unit. Additionally, you want to make sure that you can easily access your belongings. If the unit is too small, you may have to stack things on top of each other, which can make it difficult to get to what you need.

3. Climate control

If you’re going to be storing items that are sensitive to temperature or humidity, you need to make sure that the storage unit has climate control. This will help to keep your belongings in good condition. Additionally, it will protect them from damage from the elements. It’s important to note that climate-controlled units are typically more expensive than non-climate-controlled units.  Also, make sure that the unit is not located near any windows, as this can allow sunlight and heat to enter the unit and damage your belongings.

4. Cost

Of course, you need to make sure that you can afford the storage unit. Storage units typically range in price depending on their size and location. Make sure to get a few quotes before making your final decision. Additionally, some storage facilities offer discounts if you pay for a longer period of time upfront. If you’re not sure how long you’ll need the unit, this can be a good option. It’s important to note that the cheapest option is not always the best option. Make sure to consider all of the factors before making your decision.

5. Don’t forget to pay your bill

Most self-storage places charge by the month. This is important to keep in mind as you may not know how long you’ll be travelling for. And if you forget to pay your bill, the storage company may have the right to either remove, destroy or sell your belongings. Obviously this is the last thing you want to come back to, so be sure to keep an eye on what you owe them – even while you’re on the other side of the world.

When you’re looking for storage, there are a few things to keep in mind. Location, size, and climate control are all important factors. Additionally, you need to make sure that you can afford the unit. With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to find the perfect storage unit for your needs! It’s important to note that the cheapest option is not always the best option. Make sure to consider all of the factors before making your decision.
