Ultra-hip yet totally down to earth, the Militello brothers at Bro Grill & Bread knock out Argentinian happy food that will change your life forever.
The Vibe
From the outside this overtly hipster hangout looks more like a skate shop than a restaurant. And as unlikely as it is in its locale, Bro is entirely representative of the change that this traditional fisherman’s neighbourhood is currently experiencing (and resisting with such dazzling zeal.)
Once inside, the welcome is warm and inviting, first in Spanish and then English, with not even the slightest whiff of hipster elitism or pretentiousness. Chunky communal tables dominate the industrial-inspired dining space and cute posters tell you to “Dance like no-one’s watching.” I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it gives me the feeling of being… home.
The Food
The handwritten chalkboard menus scream burgers with parmesan cheese and bacon and sun-dried tomatoes and caramelised onions with lashings of luminous green pesto. Sides of nachos with guacamole and homemade Argentinian beef pie will get your appetite going, but for comfort food that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face, you simply must try one of the grilled sandwiches.
Try the succulent, oozing grilled beef (€6.90) or pork (€5.90) sandwiches, which are bursting with smoky, flame-induced flavour and served between two slices of fresh and crispy artisanal bread. Quality and freshness shine through. Wash it all down with bottles of super-chilled Estrella Galicia (€2) and let the warm, fuzzy feelings of contentedness wash over you.
For me, this is everything casual dining should be. This is my new happy place.
