5 Things to Do in Gatwick

While Gatwick is well-known for its airport and transport links – it also has plenty to offer nature lovers. With the Surrey Hills and High Weald Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty right on the doorstep, there are many scenic spots to enjoy near Gatwick.

If you’re keen to get out and explore the countryside here, there are many ways to do it! Here are five things to see and do in the great outdoors near Gatwick.

1. Enjoy Gatwick’s Walks and Trails

There are plenty of fantastic walking and hiking trails in the surrounding countryside, such as the Surrey Hills or the South Downs National Park. You could head south for a hike along the South Downs Way, a 160km route that starts in Winchester and ends in Eastbourne. Enjoy the breathtaking views as you follow the trail before stopping in a cosy local pub for a refreshment! 

2. Take a Ride Along Gatwick’s Cycling Paths

You can also explore the area on two wheels, either by hiring a bike or bringing your own with you. There are many fantastic cycling routes near Gatwick, with options for all levels of cyclists. So, whether you’re heading out with little ones and need an easy route, or you’re a keen cyclist up for a challenge, there’s an option for you. 

3. Enjoy Gatwick’s Classic Car Scene

What could be more fun than rolling around the countryside in your own classic car? You could head to the Crawley Adventure Circuit, which is set in the stunning countryside in West Sussex. Hire a British classic such as an Aston Martin Vantage, the Mini Cooper, or Caterham Seven and explore from behind the wheel. Many of their experiences also give you access to an experienced instructor who will take you on a high-speed ride at the end! 

4. Take to the Sky

If getting a bird’s eye view of the impressive West Sussex countryside is more your thing, why not take to the sky? Another great way to explore the countryside around Gatwick is via canal boat. There is a picturesque boat trip that sets sail along The Wey & Arun Canal every weekend between April and October. You can take in the beautiful scenery and wildlife from the water, such as butterflies, kingfishers, herons, kestrels, foxes and dragonflies. Or, if you’re looking for a more active adventure, why not set sail in a canoe or kayak?
