La Filomena Gastrobar (Barcelona) ~ Hearty Home-Cooking à la Sant Antoni.

Last updated on August 28, 2017

La Filomena Gastrobar is a hip little haunt for hearty home-cooking, great cocktails and wine, and lazy neighbourhood vibes, à la Sant Antoni.

Filomena Interior - by Ben HolbrookThe Vibe

Tucked away on up-and-coming Carrer d’Aldana, just a few steps from the now iconic Carrer Parlament, this hip little gastrobar oozes Sant Antoni’s unique style of cool but lazy local vibes.

Crowds of nattering locals gather on the little terrace out front, fumbling around in giggles as they take long pulls from giant goblets of German beer and smoking whatever it is that the Spanish smoke to get those raspy, scratchy voices.

Solo acts loiter at the bar sipping good red wine, pretending not to enjoy the commotion outside.

In the dining space a series of smooth concrete walls are adorned with abstract light-fittings upcycled from of old plumbing pipes.

Vintage furniture creates a casual air of industrial-chic sophistication, bolstered by the fact the staff store the cutlery and plates in a huge red toolbox by the kitchen pass.

The Food & Drink

The international menu is pulled together by Brazilian chef Bernardo’s travels. Start with beautifully-dressed salads (Finally! Why is it so hard to find a well-dressed salad in Barcelona/Spain?) with goats’ cheese, honey, mustard and mango, and tempura shrimp with curry sauce.

The zesty ceviches and tacos offer excellent value for money, while the 150g Filoburguer is a proper hit for those time when you just desperate for meat.

I also recommend the patatas bravas and provoletiña (grilled pineapple and melted provolone cheese baked with a selection of herbs).

Vegetarians and vegans will also find solace in hearty dishes like veggie moussaka with eggplant and potatoes baked in a bolognese salsa, as well as vegan tacos with black beans, grilled veggies, avocado and fresh cilantro.

Sup a rousing “michelada” and finish with the boozy homemade tiramisu (oh, the tiramisu!).

Conclusion

If you’re in Sant Antoni and looking for an informal place to eat well and enjoy a few drinks, Filomena Gastrobar is ideal.

It’s vibrant and hip without being unpretentious and the service is warm and genuine. Great value for money.
